When Elisabeth made her first Harlequin, she got naturally involved with the rich
tradition of the Italian popular theatre, the Commedia dell'Arte.

In 1594 the composer Orazio Vecchi caused a furor with L'Amfiparnasso, a madrigal comedy in three acts with a prologue, which figures characters from the Commedia dell'Arte: Pantalone, Francatrippa, doctor Grazziano, Isabella and many others
take care of a motley variety of awkward rows and foolish loves.
